So uh... I don't think there is supposed to be electrical tape here.

So we just bought this house with a pool, and the lights are pretty corroded. In fact corroded to the point they fixed one with a wedge to keep it in. It looks like my pool cleaner broke the wedge last night and the light floated up.

Notice the black around the cord, that there my friends is electrical tape. Now I'm not a a certified electrician but I'm almost 220% sure there should not be electrical tape there.

A,

I doubt that electrical tape is there to prevent water from getting into the light assembly or to prevent an electrical short. Mainly because it would not do either.. :p

I would pull the light up on the deck and see it if it had water it in. I'd take the tape off just to ensure there is no exposed wiring.

If there is no water in the unit then there maybe nothing wrong except a bad bulb.

I read somewhere on this site about a device you can add that helps clamp the floating fixture in place when the original screw fails to hold..

Maybe one of our other members knows what it is.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Unfortunately I called the pool guy and he said he believes the old owners probably did that because they never did. There is definitely condensation in the lens, and the light works without tripping the GFCI, however, there are a bunch of non-functioning LED's in the unit.

I thought about that but there is also some sort of paste put over it all as well, not sure what it is exactly, looks like more attempt to waterproof.

There was one of these installed, but broken which is why the light floated up and I discovered the electrical tape and other sealant. There actually isn't enough cord to set the light on the deck.

Right now I'm thinking of pulling the lights and installing some new Pentair 5G's since there is a controller to change colors that I can use with it. Right now these Full Moon's don't sync up no matter what I try.

The pool guy suggested changing to a 12 volt system, but there isn't a great place to place the transformer.

A,

The fear for me would be getting the old cable out of the conduit.. If you can do that then updating the light makes sense.

Looking at your pic, it sure appears there is a lot of cable still in the niche??

There is, but it's not enough to set it on the deck :)

The conduit run is only about. 5-10' for each light, so it shouldn't be too bad. The lights are $489 on Amazon (albeit with a 100' cord LOL).
