My girlfriend bought a new skimmer basket today but it's a bit too small. The dimensions of my previous basket was about 8in w x 5in h. The new basket is about 7in w x 5in h. Is it okay to use a slightly smaller basket?
Works a lot better when the basket completely fills the hole. Otherwise debris in the water will follow the path of least resistance around the outside of the basket and into your plumbing.
Do you know the skimmer manufacturer and model number? If it happens to be a Pentair/Sta-Rite/SwimQuip model U-3 (look at the underside of the lid; it may say "U-3" or "08650-58" or "08650-0158"), the best basket I've found is this one: Val-Pak Products V22-110 U-3 Skimmer Basket. Perfect fit, weighted so it stays in place while the pump is off, built to last -- I think it's significantly nicer than the OEM baskets from Pentair.
