Per the guide, Why adjust pH to 7.2 - 7.5 and raise low CYA before slam ?

My pH normally runs 7.6 to 7.8.

CYA is at maybe 20, and I will raise to 60 for the season, but it seems like SLAM would be just as effective with low CYA, although if it actually gets sunny all day, then yes that could burn up some free chlorine.

thanks,
Michael

I think you answered your own CYA question.

For pH, testing is invalid at the SLAM FC levels and will read higher than reality if you do test pH during the SLAM. Lowering to 7.2 is to ensure your pH stays in range during the SLAM so you can ignore that test and focus on FC.

Add 10 ppm CYA for UV reasons and count it as added while it dissolves in the sock. Your new target is 12 FC.

20ppm CYA is somewhat low. You're not getting the full protective effect from it. As @Newdude said, get it up to 30ppm and then proceed with the SLAM.

Thanks for the replies! Water was clear when I started, but had fine dust when brushing and using chlorine overnight when I started SLAM, dust got worse the first day, but today seemed to be a little better and used a little less chlorine. Hoping that 1 or 2 more days will do it.
