I wanted to post a review on the Skim-Around as I feel the Facebook advertisement is very misleading. They show a video of the skimmer basket being dropped in, only 3 minutes later to create this whirl pool effect. What they do not show you is the side by side comparison, and there is a break in the video. My experience has been very poor with the unit and I returned. What bothers me the most is that, you as a consumer have to pay for return shipping, and wait nearly 20 days for a full refund. The shipping is $12. The product is made of very inexpensive cheap plastic that you have to put together. I never like to post bad reviews, but this one definitely deserves it.

Below is the review for the Skim A-Round.

While this product may have worked for others, definitely not for my pool. I have 2 skimmers, and 1 main drain with 2" plumbing and enough volume that this should have worked really well. I was very excited to try it. After 3 days, I decided to return it. First, I had to shut off the main drain, and only then the velocity increased. Then I had to literally shut off the second skimmer to get the real effect. Even under normal conditions, my suction is extremely powerful so I decided to return it. Lastly, when the power is off, the unit floats. I even used the round insert to create more suction. One could basically take a suction plate for a vacuum and cut the inside out or make a larger center and the skimmer will pull even faster. Technically, what you are doing is making the surface area smaller and creating more suction. A few other concerns are that there is no customer service phone #, and the # that you call only brings you back to the website. Shipping is on you when you return it. If the company stood behind their product, they would pay for return shipping. I spent $$ on return shipping. Not worth the money or time.

Cat,

Most of the input from this site has been negative or neutral at best on this product.

I do disagree with you on return shipping.. I ran several warranty repair stations over the years and none of them paid for return shipping. None were pool related..

My question to you is... Why are your skimmers not working??

Do your skimmers have working weir doors?

There is nothing magic about skimmers, they should just work...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim:

It is not the return shipping that bothers me, it is that all the reviews on Facebook have been screened and all the negative reviews removed. My skimmers are working fine. It is that the rotating return jets in my pool (The Circulators) move the water so fast that they push debris that should be collected from the skimmers away from the skimmers. The upside is that I never really have to brush my walls, which saves me a lot of time, and the water is heated up faster as I have done testing with the heat pump. The downside is that it kicks debris to the bottom (leaves that is), and in turn I have to vacuum only a few spots. To run the cleaner is hit or miss. Not necessarily upset about the shipping, but the way they handle things.

At the end of the day, I was caught in the "marketing hype" of companies, when we all know that "magic potions" do not work. There are times when a storm hits and I quickly remove the 2 or 3 rotating heads, shut off the main drain and increase velocity on one skimmer at a time and within 30 minutes every leaf on the surface of the pool is picked up. Speak to you soon.

Mine works as advertised (vortex effect), however I have to keep my water level in a specific range (mid skimmer). If it's any higher than mid skimmer then it doesn't work and I have to throw a rock in the bottom to keep it from floating.
At this time of year (rainy season), I just throw a rock in it and call it a day because I can't be draining my pool every day. I would rate it a meh because I don't see a huge difference. My skimmer works the same with or without it.

My experience exactly. The water level has to be maintained in a very tight window. I think it does skim better when all is just right, but it’s more trouble than it is worth.

The built in skimmer on my spa works in a similar fashion but there’s not much debris in there unless I leave the cover off on a windy day- I could take it or leave it.
My pool skimmer works just fine w/ appropriate water level range & functioning weir door. I really don’t care to restrict my range any further. Fwiw most catchy gadgets have that type of return policy.
Now If someone would come out with a high quality stainless steel skimmer basket that fit my skimmer I’d go for that!
