Sand filter laterals broken?

Im going to preface with we did everything wrong, now how do I fix it?
We just got our pool setup. Our sand filter had been sitting for years with sand in it that had become nasty and moldy looking (I know, terrible) so we cleaned it out and my husband was rather aggressive with the stand pipe and laterals using that to pull the sand out. When he put new sand in we didnt cover the standpipe and it filled to the brim with sand. We simply used a hose to clear the standpipe when finished. Instead of rinsing or backwashing before connecting to the pool to filter, we just turned it on to filter and dumped a ton of sand into the pool. (Can you tell we're total newbies and my husband doesnt like to read instructions, lol). I've been battling trying to get all the sand and debris out of the pool. I have backwashed twice now and both times I have gotten a ton of sand with each. We filled the new sand to midway between minimum and maximum levels on the standpipe. I've been reading lots of threads and my valve still seems to be turning fine and working fine, so it's not jammed. Is this from getting sand in the standpipe and it will eventually stop? Do I need to empty it and check the laterals? My pool also isnt clearing like it should, it's very cloudly despite running the pump for 3 days straight, which leads me to believe my filter isnt filtering like it should.

If you are seeing sand get blown into the pool while in FILTER mode, it's very possible one of the laterals was damaged or got disconnected from the hub/knuckle assembly at the bottom, especially if no one put some water in the filter before dumping-in the heavy sand. Now if you are only seeing sand get blown out of the WASTE line during backwash, that could be the residual sand from the initial fill and sand going everywhere. That's all about the sand situation alone. If you have questions about the water clarity or effectiveness of the filter, we would need to start with a full set of water test results. At TFP, we rely on the TF-100 (link below) or Taylor K2006C test kit. Let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm not seeing sand go into the pool during filter mode still, it just did it on the initial time he turned it on prior to backwashing or cleaning the sand. The only time I'm seeing it now is during backwash.
I have a 5-way test kit from home Depot and I'm sill working on getting the pH down (I'm getting close). In the meantime I'm keeping the chlorine high. However, I'm still waiting on my automatic vacuum from Amazon and have just been sweeping like crazy hoping that will clear things up. Should I let it settle and buy a vacuum now to get it clear?

It sounds like the sand just got everywhere during install and with each backwash or vacuum should eventually get picked-up and filtered or excess removed during backwash. Nothing to worry about too much at the movement unless things get worse or later you do find sand coming out of the return jets.
