Sand filter is in the garage - How do I drain it?

So, I inherited a bit of a mess of a pool (which we are lovingly calling "the pond") from the previous owners of our new house. I've read up on SLAMing. I've ordered my test kit and tested the water (FC: 0, pH: 7.4, TA: 140, CYA: 0). I've cleaned out all the debris I can. Now I'm ready to deep clean the sand filter, so I can start cleaning up the gross green that is my pond, *cough*, I mean pool.

I am certain the past owners have never cleaned the filter. I'm not sure they ever even drained it, because it's in the garage. Everyone else in the world seems to have their filters outside. I'm not sure how I can drain it without flooding my garage. Anyone else out there have an indoor sand filter? How do you drain and deep clean it without getting water everywhere?

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks,
T

Not quite everyone....;) Mine is a small room which is now a partitioned section of my existing shed. Although I did waterproof and tile the partition so it is similar to a bathroom and deep cleaning the filter is no problem.

One option you have is to use a wet and dry workshop type vac to remove all the filter material and water.

Place it into a wheel barrow etc and then clean/wash the sand outside the filter somewhere away from the garage.
