After much reading in this forum, I decided to upgrade the cheap cartridge filter that came with my Intex 15x48 with a sand filter/pump, however, I'm not sure what size I need, also, I've read that sometimes the hoses/fittings don't fit. Where is the most inexpensive place to buy? Amazon? I'm not looking to spend a TON.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

You can never have too much filter. Bigger filters last longer between backwashing or cleaning...a lot easier in the long run. I would go with the 16" sand filter.
(but way too much pump results in higher utility bills)

My old Intex was before they changed to the threaded hoses. You may need to determine what your current inside hose diameter is.

If your Intex pool is of recent vintage, it should be directly compatible with the Intex pumps / filters.

I have the Intex 18'x48" easy set, which holds about 1000 more gallons than the pool you have. I had the 16" Intex sand filter on it for about 3 years before the filter tank sprung a leak. I replaced it with the 14" Intex sand filter this year. I'm just as satisfied with the 14" model. It still has plenty of circulation, and appears it will go plenty of time between back washes. I think the 14" would be plenty of pump/filter for your pool.

You will not regret upgrading to the sand filter. I wish I had switched sooner, made a world of difference.

If you are near a Rural King, I noticed the one by me had the Intex 14" sand filters in stock while I was picking up some liquid chlorine (7.99 for 4 gals 10%, good deal). The price on the filters was good too. I would bought there had I known.

Thanks for your feedback.

I can get the 16 from Walmart for the same price as the 14 from Amazon. I'll have to check the model number and call intex - hopefully It's compatible. I just bought my pool from target but that's not to say it's a new model [emoji12]

Where do I buy the sand - I know it has to be special kind - pool store?

You sure bout that? I didn't see any 16" in stock at Walmart. They showed some via another vendor, but it wasn't as cheap as the 14" can be found. Regardless you should always be able to find the 14 cheaper than the 16, 12 cheaper than the 14.......

16 gains some capacity between backwashes vs the 14. Circulation and vacuuming power is plenty on both. I only had to back wash 16 once "in season" per year. I've only had the 14 running about 2-3 weeks so it'll be a while before I know if it'll make it a full season on one back wash.

I doubt Target would have stock old enough not to be compatible. This is at least my pools 5th season (maybe 6th) and it was compatible with the new 14" pump I bought this spring.

Basically Intex has the three main sand filters; 12/2100, 14/2800, 16/3000?. They change up the specs a bit occasionally, I don't always keep up with the latest. Any of them will be an upgrade from the cartridge filter, and would probably be adequate for your 4400 gallon pool. I can tell you for sure the 14/2800 or up is definitely plenty of filter and pump, cause like I said I've had both the 14 and 16 with whatever they are calling the flow in any given model year.
