Replacing stand pipe and laterals

Hello,

This is my third year with a pool and my first big issue. I know enough to keep my pool running and clean, but I am pretty stupid on accessories and really damaged systems.

I just opened the pool today and as soon as I filled it up and turned on the pump I saw that it was spitting white sand. I know that is the color of my sand as I replaced it 3 years ago not knowing I did not have to replace the sand every winter. After doing some research I think this means I have broken stand pipe or lateral. My question is how do I plug my hoses from jet and pump/skimmer while I perform this repair? Is there an attachment or tool that I can use to plug these temporarily? It feels like a stupid question, in the past I have been able to have someone hold the hoses up while I replace gauges or clean pump filters. I know that replacing the laterals and or standpipe could take much linger that a few minutes so I want to be sure I am not losing water.

"19", is this an above ground pool? If so, you need to plug the water ports at the pool wall because water will try to rush downward to the filter. You can use just about anything to plug those ports. A rubber ball might work, rubber flap, plug, etc. Now if this is an inground pool, the equipment pad should be fairly level to the pool, so not too much water should flow out. But you should have 3-way or shut off valves before the pump and after the filter to isolate the equipment and do the repairs. If this doesn't make sense or match-up to your situation, post a pic of your pool and equipment pad and we can help further. Thank you for your help! Yes the pool is above ground. I will try try the rubber ball and see how it works.
