Replacing Sand in Pentair Tagelus Filter

After getting my pool from black to blue, my sand needs to get replaced, but I have a small hurdle that I'm not sure how to overcome: I'm not sure how to remove the sand.

As you can see in the attached pictures, the opening barely had enough space for my garden hose, much less my hand or even shop vac hose. Any thoughts on how to approach this?

Disclaimers: I see that tfp doesn't see the need for replacing sand: mine does. I've deep cleaned it using the tfp method and even chemically cleaned it, but it's not filtering the water well anymore.

I was thinking you might have to duct tape a small length of hose (about 2 ft or so) onto your ShopVac hose to accommodate that small gap. It will be slow-going, but I can't think of anything else unless any of our members recall a better way.
