Regular valve vs pool valve ?

Hi, I am replumbing all the equipment (1.5in pipes) and wondering if I should use basic 2 way valves available in big box stores ? Or pool grade ones ? Want to keep the budget low.

For reference, I dont have any water features and installing new intelliflo VSP and new cartridge filter.

Hi Sam,
You need to consider the longevity of the Big Box valves vs the "Pool" valves. The big box ones are PVC and the UV will eventually get to them and the "handles" will break. They can also get very sticky. The Pool valves wont, and they are much easier to actuate than the big box ones.

If you decide to go with big box valves, you can help out with the UV degredation by painting the valves and maybe all other pvc pipes too. If they get sticky a squirt or 2 of WD 40 will usually help with that.

If you were going to go with a ball valve I would suggest going with something like this from Amazon. I got one to replace a valve that this past winter was not kind to. It's no jandy neverlube valve but it's worlds better than what you can get at the local box store.

HYDROSEAL Kaplan 1’’ PVC True Union Ball Valve with Full Port, ASTM F1970, EPDM O-Rings and Reversible PTFE Seats, Rated at 200 PSI @73F, Gray, 1 inch Socket (1 inch) HYDROSEAL Kaplan 1'' PVC True Union Ball Valve with Full Port, ASTM F1970, EPDM O-Rings and Reversible PTFE Seats, Rated at 200 PSI @73F, Gray, 1 inch Socket (1 inch): Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

after having to deal with stuck and VERY difficult to move "big box/less costing" ball valves, I would totally
recommend spending a little more on a nice Jandy that won't present a problem eventually.

All great options, I see pentair valves were almost the same price as Hydroseal or similar valves, so I am going to get those.

But these will not be union valves... is that ok?

I'm thinking one valve for each of the inflow pipes and one valve for out of the outflow pipes. Total 5 valves
