I am looking for recommendations or feedback on the idea of using a pool fountain in the morning to cool my pool. I would like a temporary type fountain that I temporarily plug into my pressure cleaning port where my Polaris 280 line normally plugs into. I have a Pentair 'boost rite' booster pump (1.1HP) powering my Polaris which provides a nameplate pressure of 50psi at 13.2 GPM. I would simply schedule my booster pump to come on in the early morning (e.g., 6 - 8 AM) and plug the fountain in on days I want to drop the temperature by a few degrees.

Does anyone have any feedback on how effective a fountain is to cool a pool?
Any recommendations on a specific fountain? Or homemade designs?
Any issues regarding operating the pump (e.g., not enough pressure drop, too much flow, or how to control pressure?)
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

I bet you get all kinds of replies and ideas. In my pool I have a simple "T" PVC fountain installed at the moment that helps. The thing to be careful with that though is aeration and pH increases. So last summer, while just goofing around to top-off my water level, I propped up one of those hand (fan-shaped) water nozzles so that it sprayed across the entire deep end and just let it run for an hour or two as it slowly topped-off my pool. Best thing is it really had a better effect on dropping my water temps, probably by about 5-7 degrees or so. In fact, since this week is so hot, my water temp is already over 90, so I may do it again in the next day or two.

A return stream run through the night air will lower water temps but expect some side effects like a rise in your pH depending on your TA level and increased water loss from evaporation. How about putting up temporary sun shades. Do a search for pool sun shades and look for images to get some ideas.
