Recently, the prices of gas have tripled in California. That eliminates the advantages to heating through gas. We are installing solar at our house which means that I can run a pool heater through my electrical system. I don't know the best product on the market. Does anyone have experience on electric pool water heaters?

My pool is inground 15 x 32 and only 5'8" deep at its deepest.

Maybe 20,000 gallons.

Welcome to TFP!

Why not just directly heat with solar? I’m in Indiana with a pool about the same size as yours and have great results from my solar heat. $1200 in them 15 years ago. Virtually no maintenance and no cost to operate.

I would need someplace to put those panels I assume. Right now I'm planning on using the roof space for solar panels which would give me the energy to run the heat pump. It's not that I'm adverse to your suggestion, just that i don't have he sunlit space to provide for those panels.

I built a pool house to hold my panels. It was a win-win because the pool house is great and the panels are too. You can put up a much less elaborate structure to do the job.

The largest heat pumps for pools generally top out at 140K BTU. You would need to get the proper power to the equipment pad. They require larger wiring than most pads have as they are, essentially, and air conditioner. For a heater that size you would need at least 50 amp service just for the heat pump. Other than that, they are great, especially for your climate.
