Pump won't start - no hum or anything

I had pump issues back in May when I get the pool going. Ended up replacing the impeller and capacitor - been running great ever since. 2HP Jacuzzi (old). Came back today after being out of town for a few days to find the pool full of leaves. Pump wont run. If I go into service mode and switch it on, nothing - not even a hum. Any thoughts on troubleshooting steps?

Thanks!

jay,

Logically there are three likely issues... The pump circuit breaker in your automation, the relay that controls the automation, or the pump itself is bad.

The first thing to do is measure the input power to the pump right at the pump. Assuming it is 220, make sure that you measure across the two hot leads (L1 and L2) and make sure you get 220 vac. Checking each one to ground and getting 115 vac is not a good enough test, as it can give a false reading.

Assuming the pump is the issue, then you can look to see if you have a centrifugal switch in the back of the pump... But to be honest, if you are running a 2 HP single speed pump, you are just burning money anyway. I used to tinker with these things, but have found that unless it turns out to be something simple like a starter cap, I'm much better off getting a new one that I don't have to fool with for another 10 years.

Thanks for posting,

The leads on my meter aren't long enough to hit both of the wires at once. I did check the power at the breaker box and it's reading 220v. Didn't bother unscrewing them cause when I was messing with it I broke off the switch (this guy):

IF it was a bad start capacitor, would it be making some kind of hum sound, or nothing at all?

While I was messing with it the thing did go on at one point. I switched it off and tried turning it back on - nothing. Not sure if that provides some kind of clue...

MEanwhile, I ordered a new switch from amazon - delivery tomorrow. We'll see....

I looked into a multi speed pump - they're just so expensive. Looks like you basically get zero warranty if you DIY - pool store wants to charge nearly $2k to install a $1,000 pump I can buy on amazon.
