Powdered Pool shock loses it 'power' and just sinks down instead of dissolving

I bought a 50lbs pail powdered pool shock last season. Good thing I use nearly 50% of it... it seems like now it just sinks down and does not do anything at all even to shock the pool now. I should have bought individual packs since they are all 'sealed' . Never buy a pail... with the winter and not being air tight... it lost its 'cleaning' power'. Any suggestions of good 1lb bags of good quality shock and yet cheap? Amazon or intheSwim or chlorox ones?

Well, generally we do not recommend the use of solid forms of chlorine due to that added side-effects.

That said, I am very surprised that it "went bad" over the winter unless if got all wet maybe.

What kind of powder have you been using? What test kit do you use? What are your chemistry levels?
Usually best to stick with liquid chlorine.

Also note we do not teach to "shock" our pools on a schedule. We teach to maintain adequate FC levels at all time as a function of your CYA level according to the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. If a problem does develop, we recommend to follow the SLAM process.

I think it is not bad..I will test it soon using the Taylor test kit which I have used for 10 yrs.... it is now all green and stuff... should I test before shocking even? I kinda thought the standard way was to shock it initially.. how many 1lbs bag do I need for a 21-23,000 gallon pool?

By the way, I saw once a thread on adding borates to a pool (I mean not now initally during opening) to make the pool in some way impervious to algae. I did it last season and I seem to keep forgetting the process. I think I added like 8-9boxes or Borax and yes the pool algae even during heavy summer rains and when we were away in Asia and Europe.. the pool barely had algae growing!. It was simply amazing... I should have done that 10-15yrs ago... could have saved $1000s of dollars in useless algaecides .etc...
Can someone direct me a link to that posting again?

Borax provides a minor prevention to algae, but that is not a good enough reason to add it. And it may be masking the fact that your water is not safe because you do not have enough chlorine in the water to kill bacteria and viruses.

I am not going to tell you how many bags to throw in because that is not what we teach. I think you need to review the SLAM Process process.
