Hello all,

I have a Hayward H250FDN model heater.

I need to replace the gas valve on it. The like for like replacement is out of stock online ( at regular price). Can I use a universal gas valve? Is there is logic internal relay signals that are specific to the OEM gas valve.

The OEM is Hayward FDXLGSV0001

I would like to replace it with Honeywell VR8345M-4302 Universal 24 Vac.

Anyone ever try this before?

No worries!

I saw that one before and it has 150 dollar premium on it.

My options are wait and buy it from the normal pool stores at 350cad once they stock up

buy the one you linked at 550 cad (with shipping)

Or get the other one I mentioned. It's a little cheaper which I'm hesitant about but if it works I definitely don't mind. It's the quickest and cheapest option.

The only thing I don't know is if the universal gas vales communicates all the same information back to the circuit board as the OEM.

They do not.

Your valve:

Honeywell has a pilot valve, main valve and common.

If you get the honeywell make sure it has the pigtail for two wire operation.

Not sure it would work properly, or have the right gas flow, or even if it would fit.

I would find the replacement hayward and be safe.

There is nothing special about the Hayward gas valve except the way the gas-line is installed. It is made for that heater by Honeywell.
Look at the Hayward:

Now the universal, it has marks where the mounting holes for that 90 degree fitting could be mounted, but no threaded holes:

That's what I think too. Honeywell makes the gas valve for Hayward. The reason I post it is because it's about $150 cheaper so I wasn't sure if there was any extra special features on the Hayward gas valve.

@PoolStored yes it does come with pigtail. The rating as far as I could find doesn't matter unless it's for the 500k model. The universal is rated for up to 415k, BTUs and inlet and manifold pressures and pipe sizes seem consistent with the OEM.

I am tempted to try it but I'm leaning towards waiting for the OEM to become available. I am just curious if anybody has tried The universal and had success.
