Even a week later, and there is a risk of green. Then you spend time trying to transfer color - getting the green out of the pool, while trying to put green into the lawn. In NJ, I'd say when the risk of freezing has just past. Even if the water temp is high 30's, or barely 40. Then you can fire up the pump as needed to circulate chemicals once in a while, while you wait for things to warm to the point where you can stand to be outside doing leaf skimming, vacuuming, etc.
