Pool Depth for Diving Board

Hello all, long time lurker first time poster here.

I have not been able to find a clear answer to this question and I hope someone here can clarify.

I've read several documents that state that if a diving board is installed, the deep end depth must be a minimum of 7.5' - 9' deep, in some jurisdictions it is 8' minimum.

Here's the question: Is that from the deepest portion of the pool to the water line (middle of tile band/skimmer throat) or to the top of the tile band where the coping begins. That can easily be a 4"- 6" difference, I do not understand why that is not clear anywhere.

If anyone knows the definitive answer to this I would love to know.

Water depth. Are you looking at the ANSI for residential inground swimming pools? It clearly shows water depth

Be very clear to specify "Water Depth" to your builder. They all know what it should be but every one I've come across will try to gyp you out of 6"-9" by using depth to "top of coping"!

Ah I see, so it is to the water line as I suspected. The diving envelope is surprisingly complicated.
