I currently have a 20 by 52 in round above ground pool and the current pump isn't cutting it. Me not knowing much about pumps got a 2 HP pump on sale so I snagged it. I'm wondering if I pair that with a 16in sand filter would that be a good combo or is the pump to big for my pool? Any all suggestions appreciated thank you!

Welcome to TFP! What do you mean by Pump isnt cutting it? Is your pool developing algae? Flow? I will suggest you start reading ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry
The flow it barely pumps at all it's a smaller cheaper pump I knew beforehand that the pump was an issue because of the reviews 9 out of 10 said they had to replace the pump because it wasn't sufficient enough for the pool the flow is absolutely horrible.

What filter do you have? Cartridge? Sand? If you remove the cartridge or bypass the sand do you get good flow?
The filter is the a/c filters white with a blue rim and No it doesn't make the flow any better when I remove the filter. I just don't think the small pump has it in it to properly circulate and filter that much water and I'm running it almost all day
Also I don't have the sand filter that's what my question was I'm trying to figure out if the new 2 HP pump I have still in the box along with a 16in sand filter I was looking at buying will be efficient for a pool this size or if the 2 HP is to big for this pool and a 16in sand filter (if that makes sense)

Also, is this an intex style pool or a permanent above ground pool?

I think the 16 inch filter is a little small. You need at least a19 inch filter or better to get good filtering and safety.
I have this pump not sure if it is a single or 2 speed also attached is the sand filter I was looking to get and a picture of my pool with current pump

The filter looks good, but the pump is too big for your pool. I would look for something like this combo if you have not bought the filter yet.
How are you testing your water? I would suggest Test Kits Compared, are you following this FC/CYA Levels?
