Hey Guys,

Relatively new pool owner here. I’ve recently started to notice a few “pop outs” on my plastered pool. Some are larger than other but now that I have noticed them I am beginning to feel some other areas that are on there way as well. A few areas near the shallow end you can feel the hollowness when walking on them and it’s just a matter of time before they pop out as well.

A few questions:
1. I don’t plan on doing anything this season. Am I putting myself in a bad position for next year ? We only have about 6-7 more weeks of pool use so think it’s not worth emptying the pool at this point.
2. Can I repair this myself ? I’m somewhat handy and happy to make repairs as I have had to do a few other minor things this season. How should I approach and what product to use to fix these pop outs?
3. Am I just kidding myself as there is not just one pop out there a few and a few more areas going as well. Just a matter of time . Do you think I need to get the pool replastered next season? If so any approaches as to what questions to ask when contacting some specialists ? I understand some guys will chip away the old plaster and re plaster which sounds like the best approach but more costly . Or is prepping the surface and repairing the popped out areas sufficient and then another replaster over ?

Attaching a few photos of pop outs I can see .

Thanks for all the help !

Your plaster is delaminating. A layer of plaster is peeling off but it looks like there is blue plaster underneath and the gunite shell is not visible.

If that is the case and you are not leaking water then I would leave it alone. There is nothing you can do to "repair" it. Just begin saving for a new plaster job with a full chipout of the old plaster.

@ajw22 - Thanks for the feedback here.

A follow up question that may sound stupid but would the only real way to tell if it was leaking would be by water line dramatically decreasing in pool ? Any other ways to measure this over time?

It does look like there is another layer or plaster undeneath and the previous home owner most likely replastered over but not enitrely sure.

Do the bucket test...

Demlamination usually is from a second layer of plaster not sticking to the first layer.

Once you have two layers the next replaster needs to chip it all out and start over.
