Phosphate removal without clogging cartridge filter

In a TFP pool, we don't worry about phosphates, and don't recommend phosphate removers.

If you insist on using one, then use Use a quality product like Orenda 10,000 or Seaklear, both are 100% lanthanum chloride, and should not clog a filter.

Good read for you...

If you feel strongly about using a PR and only have a cart filter, your options are somewhat limited. If you have a valve between the pump outlet and filter you could pull it to waste. If you have a valve after the filter for waste, then you could pull the cart out of the filter first before vacuuming. If the PR gets in the cartridge, you can try a deep soaking with TSP or a quality dishwasher powder like Cascade. That might help. If those don't work, you might have to buy a new filter and just use that old one as a back up for PR treatments.

It's also imperative to get a Taylor test kit and not rely on the pool store who has a possible motive for giving you high readings. Not only is their definition of 'high' suspect, but their testing is as well.

SeaKlear and Orenda both make pure lanthanum chloride based commercial grade products. Those are the ones to use as cartridge and DE filters don’t really need the clarifier (that other PRs use) to filter out the phosphate particulates. It is the clarifiers that clog the filters.

I’ve never heard of a pure lanthanum chloride product not being compatible with all filters types.

Maybe add filter fiber first so that the fiber catches the precipitate and washes off easier.
