Hello all.

We own a vacation rental with a pool and spa near Joshua tree, CA where propane is very expensive. We have both a pentair mastertemp 400 propane heater and an electric ultratemp 140k. We allow guests to turn on the spa using a wired spa side remote. Does anyone know if there is a way to heat to temp using the propane heater and then maintain with a heat pump? The heat pump will take 4 hours to heat the hot tub to temp, where the propane heater only takes 45 minutes or so. Ideally, both the pool and spa would be heated to temp using the propane heat, then maintained using the heat pump. If you choose "heat pump preferred" it seems to just take hours. Any help or thoughts appreciated!

What automation system controls the heaters?

You can do it manually turning on the gas heater to get the spa up to temperature then turning off the gas heater and turning on the heat pump to maintain heat. But none of Pentair’s systems are smart enough to do it automatically.

Even their ETI Hybrid heater will try to run the Heat Pump for 1 hour before turning the heating over to the gas side of the heater.

Call Pentair Support and tell them your requirements. Maybe in a few years you will see it implemented.

Heaters are controlled by intellicenter, did the upgrade last month.
Welcome to the Intellicenter world.

You have not watched Pentair struggle to technology enable their electro-mechanical products. They had to abort the release of 2.017 and advise customers to roll back to 1.064. A year later we have 2.026 being rolled out. We will see how that works out.

Yep, I sent them a feature request. Seems like it would be a relatively straightforward feature to implement, I wonder why they haven't done this. I would imagine many others would want the same.
Their development team first has to tame the bugs and get promised features implemented before moving onto new feature requests. Many of us are still waiting for our Intellivalves to become Intelli.

Pentair has lots to do and not a nimble organization to do it.
