Hi, troublefreepool family,
I have a whole pentair system, the heater is Matsertemp 400.
When I turn to SPA auto mode, the service system indicator will be on. Then the panel on the heater shows 128, then R13, then 54 (current temp), but heater won't turn on.
Anything I can check or replace for this issue please?
Winter is here soon in TX. I would like to use it.
Side note: the filter is clean, I clean it every 2 months. I just did deep clean on all the tunes in the spa too, did not find any debris from there.

Attaching the system pic for reference.

Thanks!!!

Service System is usually a pressure switch issue.

Either a low pressure/flow or a bad pressure switch.

Is the Pressure switch light coming on?

The following are the LEDs:

  1. .....PS (Pressure Switch)
  2. .....HLS (High Limit Switch)
  3. .....SFS (Stack Flue Sensor)
  4. .....AFS (Air Flow Switch)
  5. .....AGS (Automatic Gas Shutoff).
  6. .....Service System
  7. .....Thermistor
  8. .....Heating
  9. .....Pool On
  10. ...Spa On
  11. ...Service Heater.

Does the blower begin running?

Do you have a 5 button keypad or 6 button keypad?

Is the heater controlled by automation?

Hi, Ajw,

6 button keypad, blower has the blower button on automation, and once I hit blower button, the blower runs.
Heater controlled by automation.

With a 6 button Keypad you have the "connected MasterTemp" heater.

Diagnostics appear on the LCD display, not on LEDs on the board.

What automation system?

What blower button where do you hit?

Diagnostic errors are displayed on the control panel LCD: PS, HLS, SFS, AFS, AGS, IGN, or NONE.

See Troubleshooting (pages 52-54)

ERROR PS MESSAGE • The ERR PS message on the LCD indicates that there is insufficient water flow to the heater. If the pump is operating, this usually indicates that the filter and/or skimmers should be cleaned (some filters may require back-washing). If the message remains on after the filter/skimmers have been serviced, the system should be checked by a qualified service technician

Hi, James, I just opened it, the lights on are LED1 and LED6, on top of the LED 1, shows PS (in little bigger font). I believe your diagnosis are very correct! It's the pressure switch!
I will go ahead order the part. And see what's going on! Haha...
Thanks!!!

The "Service System" light being on steady (it always lights for a moment as part of the start-up routine) always means that the pressure switch hasn't closed. Its saying that there is not sufficient water going through the heater for it to safely fire.
Before replacing a pressure switch (which very seldom go bad) find out why its not closing. Low waterflow is the first thing to look for. Why is that happening? Dirty filter? Slow RPM? Clogged pump? Clogged spa main drain? If that is the case, you will continue to get the message even with a new part.
Its easy to blame the safety item when its really only doing its job. Every heater school I ever attended taught that 90% of all service calls for a heater malfunction, and then about the same percentage of every service call I made on a heater, was a waterflow issue, not a problem with the heater itself. Waterflow is the first place to look, then diagnose the heater if that is good.
