Pentair Master Temp 200 Thermal Regulator replaced but won't stay clipped to spring

I replaced the thermal regulator in my Pentair Master Temp 200. When I turn on the heater it starts up fine but when it ignites it sounds like the regulator and spring are spinning and rattling. When I remove the regulator cap the regulator clip is off the regulator and the spring is detached. Any idea why this is happening?

You are not clipping it on correctly somehow. Maybe take a picture of how you put it on and then how it looks when it falls off and post them here.

This time when I took it out it was still clipped and I attached the picture. However, when I was trying to take it out it seemed like it was caught on something. I reached in and there was something that had dropped down from above. I pushed it up and the regulator and spring came out intact. But then the black plastic piece in my second picture dropped down. What is that from?

OK I was wondering about the bypass. You manifold bypass is broken and needs to be replaced. You will need a Pentair 77707-0001 Manifold Bypass Valve Replacement Kit. Also, the clip on the regulator should go straight across. See how one end is up on the next coil of the spring.
