One or two suction hoses for a sand filter pump

Hello. I have a BestWay 21' above ground pool. I have two separate outtake ports. They are at the same height on the side of the pool. One is for my skimmer one is for an external filter. I have noticed that when I plug the one for my filter my skimmer works much better. Is this something that can be dangerous to my pump or is it still getting the same amount of water flow with just the skimmer suction line working. Thanks

By law pools must have two intakes sucking water from the pool. I can't remember the name of it but it was named after a person that was sucked to a single outlet and drowned.

I used one of the intake ports and cut a skimmer into my pool. I also put ball valves on mine so shut them off when needed. My skimmer does seem to do slightly better with the underwater intake shut off, but not much. I don't actually notice much suction on either port when they're open or one is shut off.

Even with an above ground pool that doesn't have a "grate" but only two, inch and a half intakes. It would be pretty impossible for anyone of any age to get stuck to this intake port. I am not worried about it being a danger to someone I am worried about its effect on my pump. Thanks.

I would think the same amount of water goes to the pump. Do your two hoses connect to a t fitting and then have only one hose going to pump? That's how to intex is set up, which is the pool I'm familiar with. The hose going to the pump is full of water whether there is one hose leaving the pool or the two. I plugged one of mine and use the over wall the skimmer with the other. I've been doing this for the past 3 years. I upgraded my pump/filter though so I have the 1.5" hose, but I doubt that matters.

That's true, but the law applies to any pool sold commercially, whatever is done to the pools privately is not the company's "fault".

As long as the skimmer is always full of water your pump should be fine (though working slightly harder if the house dia is not increased. We actually upgraded our BestWay pool to a through-wall skimmer and only have one outlet, but it is larger now as well.
