Oil in and on water

I have a Intex above ground pool, the pump that came with it is too small so I have a utility pump in there to help move water around if not just a huge bug trap. We don't use sunscreen or oils and this morning there is a slight oil film on top and feels like oil in the water. What can it be from and how to get rid of????? Is the oil leaking from the sand pump, it is about shot anyway and no where big enough for a 16x32. I removed one utility pump because it stopped working two days ago but still have another one in pool. Please help, pool party on Thursday.

Likely the oil is coming from/came from the utility pump(s), depending on what they were used to pump last. There is no significant quantity of oil in a pool pump other than the sealed bearings. Not enough to cause oily film even if it all leaked into the water. A good item to try to remove oils are scumballs, scumbugs or other available similar products. But... they work only really well in a skimmer. Do you have a skimmer?

Skimmer nets may also help some as well, but you're likely source of oil is the utility pumps.

If it's a lot of oil, you could also try an enzyme treatment to help break it down such as Pool First Aid, but they are rather expensive.

Also... welcome to TFP!

Are you using a submersible type of utility/sump pump?

Most all submersible pumps are filled with mineral or dielectric oil for heat transfer. Most likely one has developed a leak. I would stop using the utility pumps immediately, that is not really something I would consider safe. These are not designed to be used in a body of water with people and could provide a good source for electrocution. The cords are generally not more than 4-5 feet and would leave the connection dangerously close to the waterline.

Invest in a properly sized pool pump/filter and you won't need the additional pump. Replace the little plastic toy pump and filter with this $150 setup and you will enjoy much better filtration and circulation.
