Hi, this is our 2nd year being pool owners. It is in full sun all day. The store we purchased ours from had us purchase the NST system for chemicals. We had a heck of a time with keeping our water balanced last year. Our local pool store wasn't much help becuase they haven't heard of the NST system. My question is, I know you have to be careful switching chemicals. We haven;t opened yet, but are thinking about switching to a stabilized chlorine and how to safely do that. The Nst tabs were put in our skimmer basket. Do I need to get a new basket? Any help is appreciated. We are in unfamiliar territory!

Welcome to TFP.

This site says Poolife NST tablets are Calcium Hypochlorite: 70.2%, Other Ingredients: 29.8%

Safety information for Calcium Hypochorite is:
  • Do not put cal-hypo tablets in floaters or chlorinators that were used for trichlor or dichlor tablets
  • Do not mix calcium hypochlorite in solid form with other pool chemicals including other chlorinating agents.
  • Do not consolidate partially empty packages as this could result in dangerous mixing with incompatible dry chlorinating agents having a similar appearance.
  • Calcium hypochlorite can oxidize metals, which may produce contaminants that can stain pool and spa surfaces.

Why do you want to change to stabilized chlorine AKA Trichlor which will continuously add CYA and eventually cause high CYA and require draining the pool?

We recommend chlorinating the pool with liquid chorine or a SWG.

As mentioned before NST tablets are pretty much Calcium Hypochlorite (same thing as chlorine granules).

The problem with continuous use of Cal-Hypo is that it will increase your Calcium Hardness. Both CH and CYA can only be decreased by dilution (or with extremely expensive reverse osmosis at questionable efficiency)... dilution means partially drain and refill (potentially multiple times).

If you believe dosing Liquid Chlorine daily is too much work then consider a SWG to produce chlorine for you.
