New Stock Tank Converted Pool 8'X2' (Maintenance Tips?)

First time pool owner...

We have 2 daughters that love going to the pool and beach. And if you have kids you know how much of a pain it is to gather everything and travel for a short 1 hour water experience.

So I decided to have a pool in the backyard. We are also first time home owners for about 3 months. So I couldn't spend too much on a pool to start.

My wife got a 10'X5' inflatable pool as a gift a while back. It's pretty big for an inflatable pool, but that also means dumping/refilling a considerable amount of water every week...plus any maintenance during the week.

Not into that personally...

So after searching some options, I noticed many people were converting stock tanks into pools, with a pump. That's what I did.

The pump (Aqua Pro, I think), is a sand filter pump that has the intake attached to a fitting close to the bottom of the stock tank. And the exhaust attached to a fitting right below water level at the top.

Since I was a first time pool owner, I did what most people would do........go to the pool store for advice and chemicals. Have been using the little test strips every day since I made it about a week ago.

Then found this forum and felt like an idiot.

So I literally just purchased the TFTestkit 100 with the Speedstir.

I've got a basic idea of what to do and will learn more as I do it.

But was wondering if anyone here has a converted stock tank and/ has any tips on maintenance for it.

Thanks :)

PS- If there are other stock tank pool owners, maybe we can have our own thread ;)

Hi there Matthys333, welcome to TFP! You got yourself an unusual pool there, don'tcha? Good for you on getting a good test kit. It will help you keep things nice and sanitary.

Just for a fun read- here's someone who made a pool out of a grain silo last year. Turned out GREAT!! 5 boys and a grain bin...new AGP build DIY

How many gallons do you think this holds?? (I'm clueless as to how deep a stock tank is) See the bottom of PoolMath at the top of this page for a pool size calculator.

Here is the TFP recommendations for small "temporary" (or not) pools-->Pool School - Guide for Seasonal/Temporary Pools

Please holler back with any questions we can answer after you read this. And we'd love to see a picture of the kids enjoying their "pool" :)

Thanks for the welcome and the info Maddie :)

I tried uploading an image of the setup but the picture didn't appear after uploading it. Maybe too big a file?

The silo pool looks crazy big...haha. Love that kind of stuff.

In theory, I'd like to keep the pool going all year.....possibly by making it a hot tub during the cold months and a regular pool during the warm months. Not sure if its possible yet ;)

I believe the calculations say its 750 gallons....at 8 feet diameter and 2 feet deep. I downloaded the app, but not sure which "material" I should use as it's metal and not the standard materials.
