New pump - whining noise

Just bought and installed a new Hayward above ground pool pump. The first time I turn it on, it was whisper quiet. I turned it off, and turn it on the higher speed, and it immediately started to whine. I turned it off, and turned it back on low, and now it's whining.

I had to redo the plumbing, but I installed a 1.5 inch high pressure spa hose between the pump and the sand filter. All the rest of the hoses are the same as the old pump.

Before I assume this is a DOA pump and get a new one, I just want to make sure there's nothing else I could have done wrong to cause this. Poor water flow? Is the pump oversized somehow? Not sure how to check these things.

Ok, now it's whisper quiet. Weird. The basket has been full since the beginning. I made sure to prime it before I started.

Any idea why it might have whined for a while?

I can't say. It could be return pressure. Did you change anything in the return circuit?

Check the fan shroud, any other potentially loose parts.

The only thing I changed was the pump and the hose going from the pump to the filter.

I would go digging, but this is literally a brand new pump. If I open it up, it'll be tough to return.
