Hello everyone!

I am doing some research on new construction pools and am interested in a fiberglass pool. Can anyone recommend a good company to deal with in the Louisiana area for fiberglass pools? Any help would be muchly appreciated.

 Welcome to TFP!!!

Not sure you will find anyone with that specific of a recommendation here.

Honestly, the few fiberglass pool install disasters I have read on the forum have forever scared me away from them.

The install is SO!!!! important for the pool to not crack and last. Make sure you talk to many installers and talk to their customers (try to find some that they do not tell you about as of course they will cherry pick the "best" installs so they sound good).

Hello and welcome! Jason is correct in that the base and leveling are extremely important. The installers should be aware of that, but you still have to watch and ask lots of questions. In your area, I would suspect one of the large companies such as Viking, San Juan, Latham, etc would have contacts available in your area. Perhaps more than one choice. If you go on-line they should have POCs for you to chose from.

We are in LA also, other side of the state, and were considering fiberglass....until we started talking to people and reading reviews on them. With the flood and hurricane issues we have in our state, we decided against it. There is a Viking dealer over here, but I've also searched and found several other fiberglass installers as far as Baton Rouge. Really didn't look further. We are now scheduled for install in August of a vinyl pool with concrete cantilever edge, borderless liner and coordinating gray steps. Should look pretty good when it's all done! Saving about $20k over the gunite quotes we got! Can't wait!!

I appreciate the help. I am still debating. The install does scare me. I read about another member on here in the same area that had a problem with his fiberglass pool. I am trying to see what the best options are. I heard fiberglass has less maintenance which is what got me interested in it. Anybody with some experience on these things can chime in? I am a newbie when it comes to pool cleaning and maintenance or anything that deals with a pool to be honest. In the process of building my house and want to plan for a pool for my kids. Thanks.

Sounds great! Was there any other reason why you went with vinyl pool other than price? Pictures when its done plz!

How is fiberglass less maintenance? The chemistry is all the same. The brushing is the same. The equipment maintenance is the same.

From what I have read and researched, you get less algae growth and is easier to clean on fiberglass.

Sounds like marketing hype.
Algae does not need to grow on the surface, it can grow in the water too.
Just maintain the correct chlorine levels and you will never have algae anyway.

Less maintenance - no way. Now if we speak solely on start-up, and the fact that a plaster pool goes through a lot of acid during the curing process, that's about the only argument perhaps. But all-in-all, during the year, it's all the same basic thing - maintaining chlorine and pH (along with a few other things). So fewer maintenance not really. The shell is very smooth at first, but still susceptible to calcium build up or other stains just like plaster or vinyl, so testing is important no matter what pool you have. Some people just like the look, features, and fairly quick install of FB. In my case, I have lots of clay soil that expands and contracts. I felt a FB shell might be a better choice than worrying about shifting later and getting cracks in plaster.

In the end, shop around. Cost is certainly a major factor for anyone, but find a pool that fits your taste & purpose as well as your budget. From there, ALL pools will require chlorination, filtering, etc, …. and of course "maintenance", so don't' let that item alone distract you.

Really, price was the main reason. We had a budget to stick to. Also the expensive repair later on down the road with gunite issues was a little bit of a turn off. We aren't fancy people, so having the fancy pool wasn't a goal. Getting a pool within budget to fit our big family (we have 7 kids) was the most important part of our decision process.

I was thinking the same thing, b/c that was the sales pitch we got when they came out to give us a bid.

I did quite a bit of research before we selected our fiberglass pool. I knew I didn't want a vinyl liner pool....talk about reading about horror stories! I have been in many gunite pools and did not like the feel of the surface. Our fiberglass pool was installed in 2012, and I am still as happy with it as the first day I swam in it.

The fiberglass surface is basically zero maintenance. I have rarely had to brush our fiberglass pool or spa in the nearly 7 years we have had them. With gunite, the surface ages and you have to adjust your chemistry as the surface ages. Vinyl liners are algae traps. I can't count how many problems I have read about with the liner tearing and/or water getting behind the liner.

I agree that a poor installation of a fiberglass pool can lead to serious problems. Although, a poor installation of any type of pool can lead to serious problems.

I strongly recommend fiberglass pools to anyone who is considering putting in a pool.

The chemistry does not change as the plaster ages ... not sure where you get that information. There is a little bit more to consider for plaster to keep the water balance.

For vinyl and fiberglass there are some things that do not matter on the low side, like the calcium level, which are important for plaster. But, high CH is bad regardless of the pool type.

Here is an article from Pool School: Pool School - Pool Surfaces

Well, we went with fiberglass as I am very pleased. I too read that the smooth surface was not conducive to algae, which was a plus to me. I have never had algae but also keep my pool based on TFP so its never been an issue, either way.

The most important element is site prep. Use stone instead of sand for base and filler, extra care to make sure steps area get well supported.

My reasons (I read it on the internet it must be true) for going with Fiberglass:

Installed properly
it never has to be emptied, say to repair the walls or replace the vinyl. It won't leak. My understanding (I'm a Big Noob) is that the surface of fiberglass is less porous and smoother than gunite which leads to less surface area interacting with the water, thus (usually) less chance of chemical interactions/PH issues with the wall.

Some cons: you'll have to compromise on the already formed shape. It can only be up to 16' wide and ~40' long. You have to be able to get it to your location. It's more $ upfront.

If you're looking into fiberglass I'd also recommend looking into an auto cover.

Latham pretty much owns all the fiberglass pool names (including Viking) we were looking at - and the differences aren't as much as they used to be across brands.
