New construction Long Island...Pavers on concrete NOW no wait for settle?

Re: New construction Long Island...Pavers on concrete NOW no wait for settle?

PB wants to back fill then pour 4" concrete surrounding pool, then pavers on top. All rebarred. He said no need to wait for settling. No need to machine tamper either....I'm concerned about soil settling.

Seen mixed opinions on this on other sites (also here).

Mod note: FIY I combined your two threads.

All what kind of garuntee he is giving you. My PB is doing the same thing. Except I believe he is tamping. His is lifetime from unsettling. Where on LI are u?

ElBeef,

I am in Manorville, my soil is clay as far as the eye can see though so settling is less of an issue for me then say those who have sand. With that said. I poured 4" concrete after about a month and 2 years later my pavers are still holding up fine with no settling around my pool deck. The ground around it settles and I fill underneath as best I can every spring, but they also poured some areas of footers below as well.

I didn't use swim king I used dunrite and smiths brothers for my pool and am very happy with the end result, but swim king is also a very reputable company (they were our other choice but I didn't want to pay the extra for concrete vs steel walls, I know better the steel will only get really bad if you let your liner leak and other then that it is simply a matter of sanding and some rustoleum).

But if they are saying to do it I would say go for it.

As long as they dig down to and grade virgin, naturally compacted soil and then backfill with QR (quarry run or crusher run) gravel, there should be little to no settling. Just make sure proper drainage is in place to move water away.

On LI (I grew up there), the climate is milder in the winter than most of the Northeast but you can still get freeze/thaw cycling. Putting pavers on a concrete base is much, much safer than sand alone.

Are they locking the pavers in place with real sand or are they planning to just use epoxy-sand in the joints?

Not sure how they will set/lock the pavers. Thanks for the insight.

Either method is fine, few use true sand locking anymore as it requires a plate compactor to do it right. Most will use epoxy sand. If they do use epoxy sand, ask them if they'll leave you an extra bag. It's does come out over time and so having some on hand to fill in the joints is handy.

I'm on a 4 inch pour too. only way to go I feel. we poured. didn't have any backfilling to do except before the pour covered the trenches for the pool pipes. my dirt settled on its own for 3 weeks we brought in gravel framed and poured. didn't start pavers on pour for about 4 weeks cause of tile and coping needing to be done. haven't had any issues yet but mine is young.

if you are on clay you should be ok. from what I have seen over the years with my buddies is if something is going to rack it cracks quick. after my steps headwall and end of decking was poured it cracked in the middle next day. concrete is weird. I mean we are tied into last pour. head is sitting on a footer with rebar out of it into the headwall pour and still cracked right down the middle short way not long. didn't heave at all just a crack right through. we aren't worried at all. pavers are laid. bone level sloped into the drains.

Quite frankly on concrete near a pool just have them lock in the borders and do nothing for the interior less polysand or sand tracking into your pool that's how mine is love it sooo much more then pools with polysand or sand and it's not necessary in concrete

Very helpful thread! I'm in town of Huntington as well and planning to meet with Swim King (among others) for a potential new pool build. Since this post is a few years out now, just wondering whether anyone in the area has any additional feedback on paver settling or anything else regarding your builds.
