My mother in laws pump is shot and motor died. She is on a fixed budget and asked me if I could replace it. Im fairly handy, but im not sure which brand or model to purchase that is not too expensive, but will last a while? Its a 1.65 hp motor, so I’m assuming I need to stick to that size?

Her pool has a booster pump, which is working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you need to determine if its the pump or motor that is bad. I kept my old pump and paired it to this several years ago. Its a variable speed pump motor. If your pump itself is okay and you can pair it to this motor...you could save a substantial amount of money.

Century (A.O. Smith) 1.65 HP Motor, V-Green.

Thanks for the reply. The motor is about 3 yrs old. When turned on the motor runs for a few seconds and then trips the breaker. The pump is about 20 years old. I’m going to check the wiring, etc., but could a bad pump cause the motor to trip the breaker? If so, can I repair the pump, or is replacement the only option?

There can be multiple reasons for a breaker tripping, here are the easy ones.

Is it on a GFCI breaker? Many times CFCI breakers fail.
If there is debris in the impeller, it can bog the motor and trip the breaker. Disconnect power/turn off power to the pump and check the impeller.

You can check to see if the impeller is clogged. Turn off the power obviously before proceeding with this. There are some videos on youtube on how to do this. It doesn't require anything but reaching in after you remove the filter basket with your hand, again with the breaker for the motor OFF. If that isn't an issue...disconnect from motor and have a look at the impeller. Your motor is pretty new so I would more be suspecting it to be a pump issue.

I just pulled the motor off of the pump and turned it on. It makes a loud buzzing sound but doesn’t spin. It spins freely if I turn it by hand. Bad motor?

I took the pump apart as well and it seems fine. Nothing is bound up and the impeller is in good shape.
