Need advice on replacing Pentair drive unit

I need some advice on replacing a drive unit. I have a Pentair Intelliflo vs+svrs pump. The keypad drive unit was hit by a golf ball popping off the cover and dislodging the keypad / lcd component. Rain water got inside the keypad unit and the inner board. I dried and cleaned out both components. However, the unit will not turn back on and thereby the pump can't be started. My research here in TFP and the internet leads me to believe the drive unit needs to be replaced. However, it appears to me that Pentair only sells this unit for warranty work and I need to buy a new pump 011017. My unit is out of warranty. I have found a few websites that sell what I believe to be a replacement drive unit but am not sure if they are a correct match. I'm also not sure if I have identified the correct model number. On my pump there is a sticker stating Pentair Intelliflo vs+svrs 354017. On the pump under the drive unit there is a sticker stating 350105 Jun 2015. On the side of the pump is a sticker stating 350105S date 07/29/2015. Sunplay has a drive unit 353251 for $619.95. This appears to be the correct part but I'm not positive. (I have placed a call to Ben Carter too) Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

For $619 for the drive unit, I would just buy New pump and use the motor itself as a spare incase the pump head or motor go bad. An alternative is buying a verified working pump from craigslist and either using the drive unit or the whole pump. You might get lucky and find a pump with a bad motor, but working control panel.

I would also check if you qualify for the power company rebate from purchasing a new pump. CA Edison gives $200 rebates, so it could soften the blow of a new pump.

He could get a new Pentair 011018 IntelliFlo for $900 and some change from Amazon. Since his pool was built in 2013, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he probably has anti-entrapment drains, so the VS+SVRS isn't needed. Plus, he isn't worried about warranties, because Pentair wouldn't warranty a replacement of the drive unit that wasn't done by an authorized repair shop.

May I ask where you got this information?

What is the difference between 011017 and 011017? I believe I do have the anti-entrapment drains. I do use the variable speed settings. Not sure what the SVRS is.

A new 011017 pump on Amazon is about $1400. I like the idea of having the spare but was hoping to cut my cost to buy just the replacement drive if I can. I haven't checked Craigslist yet. That is a good idea and will do.

ccw,

You do NOT need an SVRS pump.. Have you not had problems with yours??? If not, you are lucky.. Mine often goes into the "entrapment" mode because it thinks someone is sitting on the main drain.. It then takes me 10 minutes to get it to come back up. The slightest surge in water pressure will cause it to shut off. Just shutting off the filter air relief valve too quickly will cause it to trip.

Thankfully, I know what makes it trip most of the time and have learned to avoid them... When mine dies, it gets replaced the next day with the 011018.

Thanks,

Jim R.

OK, well I wouldn't automatically assume that is any kind of authority. It could be true, but I'd want to hear that directly from Pentair support. And even then I'd call twice to hear it from two different customer service reps. And then, if that didn't pan out, I'd next try a local pool maintenance company or builder, one that is a Pentair dealer, and see if they can't use their Pentair connection to get your part(s). In other words, I wouldn't give up on getting your pump fixed based solely on an online third-party pool parts supplier's website.

Once you get a real determination, or maybe a repair estimate from a local shop, then you'll be better armed to make the decision to repair or replace.

To Jim's point, if whatever you end up doing gets rid of the SVRS feature, you'll be better off.

Thank you all for your advice and recommendations. I very much appreciate it. I checked Craigslist and found a used drive from someone in my town. It is up and running now just fine.

Jim, I haven't experienced any issues with the pump like you have. However, the first pump died just before the warranty and had to be replaced.

ccw,

Just curious... Was the new control head for an SVRS pump or for a standard IntelliFlo...

Good job on finding a replacement either way...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Apparently...

the odds of finding the exact replacement part needed for a pool pump, in your own town = the odds of a pool pump getting hit with a golf ball just before a rain storm!

The universe is back in balance!!
