Spring is in the air, finally. A new equipment pad has been poured and now begins the repositioning and reassembly of equipment. BUT WAIT! The brick wall of my home at the pad is covered with moss and mildew. What do I do?
Bleach (pool or household strength) is the go-to for most people. It works but is not as gentle to surfaces or the softscape (or clothes) as we might presume. So with many decades in masonry restoration, I offer a couple of alternatives that are effective and gentler for you and the environment.
1) D2 (https://www.d2bio.com) I've used it often. It doesn't harm the environment. Is safe around children and pets. Has been approved for use in National Parks and monuments. The Park Service is pretty thorough in evaluating what can and cannot be used in the environs under their supervision. It is sprayable and can be used without scrubbing. It will take repeated applications, as it works slower than bleach. And be reapplied as needed to control the mildew, moss, lichen, etc., on a variety of surfaces. Sold through a network of distributors.
2) Concrobium (

) I have used often. Very effective. Similar to D2 above, just works a bit differently. I don't recall if it is as environmentally safe as D2 but a read on their website would yield more clarification. It does leave a residue behind to inhibit regrowth. Can be used on a variety of surfaces. Is sold in big box stores but be alert to the fact that there is a consumer and a professional version. I did not use the consumer version so I have no opinion.
