Metal out and chlorine

Recently I had to add some metal bye hd to my pool to try and get rid of iron and some copper. All of my numbers were good and the water looked great before this but i was having some iron stains on the steps . Now I’m having trouble keeping chlorine levels up in the pool.

My swg is twice the size needed for my pool and I can normally run it for 12 hours at 50% and Its been good. Since I put the metal out I’ve bumped it to 100 and I’ve even put liquid chlorine in it to bring it up but it goes right back down. What should I do? Please help !!

Can you give us more information on what sequestrant you added?

Sequestrant does get consumed by chlorine. But normally does not create that high of demand on chlorine.

Still cannot get any decent information on it. I took out your link as it did not go to anything related.

You do realize those products just sequester the metals. It is far better to release them and then either filter out (if iron) or drain and replace with clean water (if copper).

Did you put anything else in the water? Can you provide a full set of test results?

Stopped by the pool store to get some salt and let them test my water just to compare what I came up with. The numbers I got from my
TF-100 are written in ink. I added salt and some phosphate remover. Then tested it.

My chlorine drop test showed 2 at 4pm then when I came back and tested at 9pm I had less than 1. When I turned my swg up to boost my iron stains came back on my steps yet the pool store says zero iron. I’ve had the pool for 3 years and this is the first time I feel lost. Pool water looks good but it won’t stay that way with the chlorine that low.

Get some Liquid Chlorine in there STAT!!

Do you know where the copper came from?? My concern is if you were to change out water, use polyfil or paper towels to capture iron but didn't figure out the source for the iron and particularly the copper, well.....it could reappear. No heater, right???

City water or well water??

Those store tests just go to show you how wrong they can get it.

City Water , No heater. Copper had to come from algeban that pool store sold to me a couple weeks ago.

Well, if we can believe the pool store result (and for metals tests its more a matter of presence vs lack thereof)..but IF you find you've got Copper in your pool REALLY has a lot.

Got any blonds in the fam whose hair is looking a bit green? Any metal stains yet?....You can work with polyfil in your skimmer to help remove the iron but the best way to remove copper would be a drain and refill. Even if only half that would be helpful.

I had no idea that algaeban would cause that much trouble.

Yea it has caused a little green tint to my daughter’s hair and I had some brown stains on the steps that the vitamin c took right off. That is the reason I got it tested for metals at the pool store because my test kit doesn’t test for it. The pool store test showed zero iron so I’m not sure if their test is very accurate.

None of this explains why I can’t keep chlorine in the pool all the sudden though.

Uh oh...problem with how you did your test. :( You have to test in the AM before the sun comes up....once any sun comes up those UV rays chew chlorine up. The reason we test in the dark is to rule out UV interference.
