I have a good foot or 2 of dirt in the pool from Hurricane Irene over the drains on the "surge" side of the pool. Any ideas how to get it out? I'm on the water, I'm worried about draining too much and having the pool pop out of the ground, I'm not much above sea level. I'd take pictures, but it just looks black. Any advise on how to proceed? Is this like a shovel is out operation or is there an easier way?

I would look for a trash pump that can pump out debris. It will take a lot of water, and you will have to stop to refill so you do not drop the water level too much.
