So, we've decided to go with marker tiles edging our steps. We're using 2x2 NPT Lightwaves Aquamarine for the waterline. I think I want to use two rows of the 1x2 tile as the marker tile. It's a geometric pool so we'll have straight lines. It should look similar to a recent post here:

...but my question is about our benches. I want to do the same on our benches...but what about the side of the benches? Should we consider putting marker tile so that if you are swimming with your eyes open underwater you can clearly see the side of the bench? We have one length where the bench ends in the middle section of the pool -- in other words, we have benches running from both ends toward the middle but then there is a gap where there is no bench. I'm wondering if that could be dangerous because you may think you're swimming to the wall where the gap is and instead come up quickly on a section of bench. I'm also thinking the stairs could pose a similar risk.

I'm a bit worried about too much of that tile as it is...it is super-blingy. Maybe we just use individual 2x2 tiles as markers every couple feet along the walls with benches? Or maybe we use the 1x2 but only where the benches stop and we go vertically going down to the floor or something?

Photos may help...one shows the stairs and the other shows the bench that I'm talking about...

I'm sure I'm over-thinking this...I just get nervous because our primary users are youngish kids and oldish grandparent, most of which are pretty clumsy and careless.

Hey now!!! There is no such thing as TOO BLINGY!!! says the :queen: of BLING!

I see what your thoughts are for the sides of the benches and steps and they are valid concerns. I would do a line of the tile outlining the sides of the benches and steps as well as the tops like in the picture. Truth be told I would LOVE for you to do it ALL in that tile. A solid blanket of tile all over the walls, steps, benches!!! But I am also not the one paying for it so.......................but it sure would be pretty!!!

While the sides are nice, if you didn't want to spend the extra money it probably isn't a huge deal in a pool that size. Unless you are swimming at the very bottom, you will likely be able to see the marker tiles along the top edges of the steps.

The pool is only 4-5-4 so it’s a fair point re: visibility of the markers on the top of the benches. The kids are the only ones likely to be swimming below the line — they like floor pick up games...but probably a low probability of problems.

I think covering them in the tile might be a bit overwhelming. Kim, are you suggesting tile completely covering the top and sides, so tile would go all the way to the floor? We have stairs and benches covering 3 of the walls in the pool...and Unfortunately they keep picking the wrong numbers in the big lotteries... ;)

I’m leaning toward nothing on the sides...or maybe just a few single 2x2 tiles oriented as a diamond at certain places...maybe even just one by the stairs and one on either side of the gap between the benches.

Too many decisions! Thanks for your thoughts!
