[h=1] Hi guys.a few days ago I saw a a freind of mine and he told me that he built a shallow swimming pool (approximate depth of 5 inches)and he made it using Concrete masonry blocks for the structure instead of armed concrete and so far they had no problem with the swimming pool.he told me it is going to be much cheaper than using armed concrete for the structure and that I can use it for the construction of shallow swimming pools.

is it ok to make pools of cementary blocks?what are pros and cons?

If done properly, cinder blocks can be used to make large pools:

duraleigh and OTPirate's pool is made of cinder black (there is a build thread somewhere)

and this thread is working on reviving one: Abandoned Pool - Suggestions Please

one thing came to my mind is they might be more susceptible to cracking where there is an expandable soil beneath them comparing to armed concrete

I have no idea what you mean by armed concrete.

Cinder blocks are certainly more prone to cracking. That is why I said properly installed. They need to be placed on a solid concrete footer with rebar both in the footer and running up through the cinder blocks with the vertical rebar encased in additional concrete.

You can't just throw some blocks on the ground and expect them not to move.

5” deep? That’s not a swimming pool, that’s a gigantic bird bath.

House foundations with full 8 foot deep basmements are done all the time with cinder blocks.

Again they need to be installed properly. Typically cinder blocks when used as a structural have their openings filled with concrete and rebar is inserted vertically into the concrete to tie all the block together.

This can be much cheaper than paying to have a wall formed out of liquid concrete.

As for pools this day and age it's probably a brake even proposition when compared to a steel walled in ground pool. 20 or 30 years ago cinder block was probably cheaper if you knew a good mason.
