Lumiere Technologies - AK600 Solar Pool Ionizer - Thoughts?

Today I found an add for what appears to be (the subject line) a new kind of pool care product. While I am trying to remain neutral here in my questioning (can you see my smirk?), I would like the honest opinion of you experts on this (watch the video):

Questions I have are:

1. What IS this thing?
2. Is there any merit to this?

Standard copper ionizer nonsense. Not new in the slightest. It is not useful in a pool unless your goal is green hair and stained pool surfaces.

An incredibly over priced and inefficient way to add copper to the pool.

Not one bit.

Why even buy a copper ionizer?? What’s the point of wasting the money and minuscule electrical usage. If anyone wants copper in their water, simply buy and add copper sulfate to the water. Bring the concentration up to about 1ppm and you’ll be all set....no need for anything additional to be added to your equipment. And, since copper is “forever” the only time you lose it is by backwashing or splash out or rain dilution with overflow. There really is no cheaper or easier way to add it.....

Buuuuuuut (and you knew there would be a “but”) .... you will now have a metal in your water at a concentration very close to scaling. SO if you ever have to increase your FC level or if your pH gets out of control, you will almost definitely get staining. Copper staining is reversible, but typically requires a very expensive chemical protocol to remove it and then some water exchange to lower the concentration.....of course, once the concentration is lowered, you lose much of the benefit that copper offers as an algaecide.

(As you can tell, I’m playing Devil’s Advocate...)
