LED Replacement Bulb for Pentair SAM Light?

My Spectrum Amerlite stopped working on Friday night, both bulbs are dead, and I wanted to update the community on replacement options.

Although I'd like the better colors that an entire LED replacement light would offer, I've got concerns about pulling a new cord and compatibility with my Jandy panel and Zodiac iAquaLink. Bulb replacements retain the original color wheel and controller functionality.

My main question is how important is it to use a "pool-grade" bulb? The bulbs from INYO and other pool suppliers are much more expensive than similar bulbs; what's the difference? The Feit LED replacement looks like a decent candidate too.

This one requires removing the innards from the Sam and capping wires.
7 solid colors and 9 color shows selectable by turning on/off
I don't think I'd be able to directly select colors from my Jandy panel and Zodiac iAquaLink controller. The Pentair Sam/Sal only has 9 colors, and unless one of the other lights I can choose matches this retrofit I'd be stuck manually turning on/off to cycle through the modes.

I’m curious which option you went with? I’m in San Diego and have a light where the motor got water on it and it’s no longer working. I had also saw the LED Conversion kit and was considering that route.

I ended up replacing the bulbs with similar halogens. The following from 1000bulbs.com were the right combination of meeting specs, 4000 hours life, low cost, and relatively fast shipping.
I didn’t want to fuss with expensive bulbs, LED fit, etc.

I also replaced the gasket with the following:
Impresa Products 2-Pack... Amazon.com: Impresa Products 2-Pack Pentair-Compatible Light Lens Gasket - 8 3/8" - Equivalent to 79101600Z - Works with IntelliBrite Lights, AmeriLite Lights and SAm AmerLite Lights in Pools and Spas: Home & Kitchen

Disturbing the light led to a leak which required an epoxy fix documented here:

I didn’t go with the color LED replacement because of the cost, incompatibility with my controller, and not having the solid colors I wanted (yellow, orange, and red). Apparently no pool lights come in those colors; maybe they just don’t look good underwater.

I noticed the motor repair kit from inyopools.com is relatively expensive. I think if/when my motor or circuit dies I’ll just buy a whole new light.
