Leak detection

I believe my pool has a leak and I've long suspected that it's something in the skimmer. My pool has three output locations, the main drain, the skimmer, and the vacuum. I feel like when I turn the actuator to allow for more suction from the skimmer, the water level drops faster. I bought a leak detector kit and was unable to find anything, but of course you have to have the pool turned off for those to work. Is there anyway that I could diagnose the source of a leak somewhere in the skimmer system myself, or is having a professional leak detector the best option?
There's never any visible leaks anywhere (no dripping water outside the pool, no wet spots, no areas of the yard that are extra soggy-though I believe most of the types are probably not under grass, but under a brick patio so it wouldn't necessarily be obvious) But I feel like I'm having to fill the pool up more than I used to

If there's a skimmer leak in/around the throat or outer faceplate area you might be able to find it. But if it's in the ground you'll need a pressure/sound test to catch it. Maybe the link and image below will help you.
