Lateral won’t screw in

Replacing sand in Pentair Triton II 60. Unscrewed laterals to check condition, have put back all but one lateral which will not screw in. Bought new laterals - they all will not screw in to this one spot. Any suggestions? Can we close that opening somehow and just leave this one out?

Welcome to TFP! So you can't get either an old or new lateral arm to reengage into the hub? Humm. @cowboycasey you know of any tricks to this one? Hub threads compromised somehow? All I can think of is patience, followed by more patience, a little luck, then last resort a hammer.

Mill, if this drags-on for a day or so, be sure to add some liquid chlorine to the water now and brush it around to help keep algae away.

Thanks. Patience is running thin :). Breezed through all steps and spent hours yesterday on this one lateral and again today. Myself, husband and son have all tried - using different laterals old and new. The assembly does not come out on this model (without replumbing), so no way to hammer in - all being done reaching in to bottom.

Oh no. That stinks. Now I can really sense the frustration. I hate to say it, but you almost might have to cut the PVC so that you are able to pull that whole thing out of there and get a good look at it. It can't be easy on the back leaning in there on a hot TX day trying to thread the needle. :brickwall:

I wish I could help but I have never had a sand filter.. I love doing some DIY but no idea how..
Sorry CC, I thought you were "In the know" on those as well. I know @JohnT is, so perhaps he has a thought. But my gut says pulling the whole thing out might be required.

Might be worth putting your phone or an endoscope camera down there to take a look at the hole.

You could take a lateral to a hardware store and try to find a pipe fitting with the same threads and see if the fitting might thread in and clean out the threads.

Any possibility there is a protrusion on the tank bottom that is keeping the lateral from getting perpendicular to the hole?

You can disconnect the entire filter from the plumbing by unscrewing the large nuts on the outside of the filter. Then move the filter away from the plumbing a little and remove the second nut, which holds the external fitting to the tank internal piping (bulkhead connection). This will allow removing the internals and allow you to actually see the threads up close. Once out, you may wish to use an old toothbrush to thoroughly clean the threads.
