Moderator comment: This post was separated out from this thread: Experiences with LeMotte Waterlink Spintouch with Orenda app?

I hate to resurect an old thread but I have both the Taylor(FAS-DPD) and the Spin Touch and I've tested on my neighbors pool (mine still being built) and the numbers from both the Taylor and the Spin Touch nearly almost always match. I would be extremely interested Pool-Medic on the source of the inaccuracy results you speak of.. Not trying to pick a fight - I am legitimately interested in this as again my numbers match very closely.

HI Pool-Medic

I appreciate the reply. Well, I already own it as well as the Taylor - so once my pool is complete I am going to keep them both and use them both and start a spreadsheet and over time I will share the results. If I could send it back - I would but I can't so I may as well use up my disks and keep track for others to learn from. Again, I appreciate the response!

I'm not sure where the inaccuracy come from, but they are there. I frequented a pool store that used the Spintouch and several times I took them water to test after I tested with my Taylor K-2006. A couple of times they were close, but several they were way off the mark.

The first problem they had was the Spintouch has a limit of 15ppm FC. When I took over my pool from the previous homeowner (a puck and shock guy) the CYA was in the range of 250. To follow the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] ratios my minimum FC was 19 and I usually targeted 23 or so to stay above the minimum. They couldn't test that high..

Secondly, the CYA limit of the Spintouch is 150. With the Taylor drop based reagents I could do a diluted test and at least get in the ballpark and see how my CYA reduction program was working.

Even within range, there were times that the Spintouch results just were not right. Why? Who knows, but I can only surmise that there was only one or two employees who followed the Spintouch cleaning protocol. When the machine was clean and dry it probably gave fairly good results. If not, again who knows.

The consumer version of the Spintouch is the ColorQ-7. We have multiple people show up here each year happy that they found a "geek" product to help maintain their pool. Almost all abandoned its use due to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. We even had one member test the same sample of water three times in a row and ended up with three different sets of results. Here is an example of a ColorQ post: ColorQ vs TF100 and here is a review where the Color Q was used alongside a TF-100. Test Kit Comparison

Keep it clean and dry any you may have good results. But, TFP will never recommend a Spintouch or ColorQ mainly due to the cost vs. the know accuracy and simplicity of drop based testing.

I will add this, improper filling can cause errors too.

This was invented with pool pool stores in mind, tries to take the knowledge out of it and gives a printout that you simply hand to the customer. The parameters can be adjusted up or down and the corresponding sheet reflects this.

It was absolutely brutal on ph, it would say 8.1 yet when using Taylor the result was a nice salmon colour. 7.2-7.6. Yes it was documented several times to LaMotte.

We all know if Chlorine is above 10, every other reading is affected. So you would waste one disk versus a quick chlorine drop test before moving on to the others.

The wheel was perfected with titration, yet these companies love to reinvent another form of round.

Tim: Received PM - Thanks for the new thread - but I'll let this lie here.

As I said - I own the machine as well as the Color Q and the Taylor 2006. Full disclosure - I am partially color blind and my last pool - I had built and ran for 4 years (then sold home) and I used nothing but a color q - never had to SLAM. Because I own these I will continue to use the Spin Touch with the Taylor and keep a spreadsheet. I will post under a new thread for anyone who cares to view. I am very curious to see how in accurate it is. Admittedly I've only used it 3 or 4 times at neighbors pool and testing my own water with great results - but again I'll take 30 - 40 tests and spreadsheet them with the Taylor. I wont use the Color Q as it's pretty old and I am not going to buy new reagents.

I am well aware of the limitations of both machines - and my school of thought was if I took care of my pool and never had to slam it was a non issue... So far that's worked - at least for me... YMMV Well wait - on 2nd thought I did have to slam before. We left for a week and came home to a clean pool but showing light algae - I just dumped tons of bleach in it for a week :) - we are spoiled in florida. 2.5 gallons of very fresh bleach is delivered to Pinch A Penny every Thursday - for 5 bucks :)

Cheers!
