New home has been sitting vacant for 3+ years and has 16x32 rectangle pool with 9ft deep thats concrete and has a ripped liner. We drained the pool and pulled the liner out and was going to replace it with a new one that came with the house but is a lot larger than the pool and doesn't fit. We wanted to paint it anyways next year as we figured it'll be better and less hassle. The pool seems to have a 4ft thin fiberglass or metal form all around the top border which then had thin foam around it. Would this be ok to just remove the foam then epoxy paint over it all? It doesn't look like it can be easily removed. We're on a tight timeline since the season is basically over and would love to get 1-2 weeks with it just to make sure all the new equipment we bought works well.

Sounds like you want a liner pool to be non liner?

EchoBrite finish has been applied to a few, but they were somewhat rare full concrete pools with liners. Not sure if paint would be a good enough seal.

I'm not sure that would work on yours which sounds like a hybrid concrete / fiberglass.

Exactly. i'm assuming previous owner decided liner pool and it can be either. Also i don't think its a hybrid since that part is only at most 1/4 inch thick. My guess is when building they put that around so they can glue the foam to and be a bit smoother than concrete against the liner on the edges. This is a poor and rural area and everything is hours away so likely they weren't used to concrete pools or painting. i called all 4 pool supply shop within 3 hours and no one carries paint or knows the different types.

It's going to be much cheaper to just replace the liner.

If yours is a full concrete shell like mine, painting won't be an option. It needs something to seal and auquabrite would work if you have a licensed installer nearby. It's my understanding they would also plaster it prior to applying the finish so it has something to bind to. But again this is likely to be 3 to 4x more than just a new liner.

there's no one nearby unfortunately so we're on our own. i'm thinking were going to just get epoxy primer and paint then try painting ourselves and see what happens. I figured worst case we're out $1500 in paint and a weekend of work but don't think it'll hurt anything having some paint on the concrete.

Dont paint it. You will regret it. It's the worst thing you can do. That is likely a hybrid pool and they installed the liner for a reason. The paint doeant last and it has to be prepped correctly. Many rehab painted pools done DIY leak as they have issues around skimmers and penetrations that paint wont fix. I get the timeline and all but the liner is the way to go
