I am purchasing a pool next week and I am debating the intex 42" high rectangular pool vs. the intex 52" rectangular pool. I would really like the 52" pool but my son can only stand with his neck above water with a water level of 42" right now. I wanted to buy this pool so he can have room to grow, and we can fill it higher next year when he is taller. The only issue I see is that the horizontal sides will bow if they are not at the proper height. Does anyone have an intex rectangular pool that is filled below the recommended water line? if so, can you let me know how it is working?

Mine is below the line right now, it's normal for these pools to bow and they will even have a slight bow when 90% filled. It will not affect the longevity or swimmer or whatnot. Get whatever pool you desire. I wanted the 5ft however I couldn't get one lol

Welcome to TFP! Glad you found the forums! Hang out and learn how to keep your pool crystal clear, trouble free! I'd recommend if you haven't already, read through Pool School and get yourself a professional test kit, such as the TF-Pro or TF-100 from TFTestKits.net. Alternatively, the Taylor K2006C (the C is important as it gives you more reagents) is a good kit. But the TF-Pro is by far the best bang for the buck.

As for having the pool water level lower (you're considering 10" lower than the top 52", or 20%).. That's a pretty big number. You might be running into issues with the return jet being above the water line. The sides will definitely bow. I'd start to worry about structural integrity with a considerable amount of bowing. I think only a couple inches lower would be okay, but 10" is quite a bit.
