Intex plunger valves. Valve stem leak

Monday morning after filling the pool for the first time and firing up the pump I noticed the plunger valve dripping from the valve stem on the return.

I was tired from the night before, needed to get things right before the water got too deep so I removed the valve and hooked the hose directly to the return. No more leaks.

Well, today I was going to remove the valve from the suction side and discovered it won't work. Then I started questioning what took place when I was half asleep.

Turns out, I jammed the gasket with the rib on it between the hose and the return fitting and it worked fine. Ok, great, but it won't work on the suction port, the mouth is too wide.

I decided to swap plunger valves and put the leaky one on the suction hose. Well, apparently both new valves leak when used on the return. So, I shrugged and removed the valve from the return and jammed the gasket back in there. What can I say other than it works better than the valves do. Funny thing is, I would've never done that wide awake, and yet, it actually works.

How often do these valves leak from the stem like this? I tried taking one apart and didn't see any burrs or defects around the 2 o rings, and yet it still leaks. Shame there's not a packing nut I cans imply snug down a little.

I ordered a different o ring this morning which I believe will fit, but will be tighter than the originals.

The new ones are 36 thou thicker which kind of concerns me, but it was the best I could do.

I should just get it over with and pipe the whole thing in pvc. I know it's coming. ;)

This was the best I came up with. I couldn't get an o ring that was a tad bigger and didn't feel like wasting more money on valves I don't even like.

That said, they do turn a little tight but they won't leak. That's a soft silicone o ring inbetween the handle and cap.

I'm really over Intex's proprietary hoses. I do like the pool, but if I had it to do over I'd probably go with a Hayward pump and filter setup.

I really do like the intex skimmer though. A lot.

I need to dig into custom connectors for this. Who knows, maybe I'll stick with their stuff.

I’m using a combination of Intex stuff, Hayward stuff, and PVC, and I’m happy for now.
