Might be a dumb question.

The Intellichlor power center manual tells me it needs to be wired on the same circuit at the pump through a pool timer so it only operates when the pump is on. This makes sense,

However I am setting up with a new Intelliflo 3 which does use an additional timer. I also was under the impression the generator would not work if the was no or insuffcient flow through it.

How do I get around this?

That is from the pre-VS pump days. Pentair rarely updates their manuals and they often conflict with each other.

One way is add the IO board to the Intelliflo3 and connect the IntelliChlor through the IO board relay. That is what Pentair would like you to do.

Some people use a current sensing relay and there are a bunch of threads on that if you do a forum search.

Or you can connect the Power Center using a timer and keep the timer in synch with the pump controls.

Or you can install a Pentair automation system that controls the pump and Intellichlor.

I also was under the impression the generator would not work if the was no or insuffcient flow through it.

The Intellichlor flow switch is a secondary safety device that does fail. The cell power needs to be on some type of timer or relay as the primary safety device.

Pentair Manuals say:

The IntelliChlor Salt Chlorinator Power Centers must be interconnected with the pool pump motor power source. This ensures the IntelliChlor Salt Chlorinator and pool pump will switch on and off together.

and

WARNING:CHLORINE GAS BUILDUP CAN OCCUR WITH IMPROPER WIRING: To reduce the risk of personal injury the IntelliChlor® Salt Chlorine Generator (SCG) Power Center must be installed on and wired to the load side of the time clock, electronically controlled switch, or relay load side, so that it will receive power only when the pool pump is on. Otherwise, dangerous chlorine gas buildup can occur. The IECG should never be energized when the pool pump is OFF and water is not flowing through the unit.

Intellichlor Cell Explosions do Happen

Here is one report - Explosion near the SWG

And another - Help,, my pipe exploded !!!

Exploding pool!!!

TAK,

What do you mean "Get round this?" You never want the Power Center to have power unless the pump is running... This is to prevent the cell exploding if the flow switch fails.. Does not happen often, but often enough to never try to cheat this mandatory requirement.

The IntelliFlo3 has two relays that you can set up as "Flow Dependent". This means the relay will not close unless the pump is running with a certain amount of flow.

You just wire the flow dependent relay, inside the IntelliFlo3, between the breaker and the Power Center.

Side note.. I "assume" you have the IntelliFlo3 that has the relay card.. They come with and without the card.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim,

I guess "get round this" was a poor choice of words.

That makes solution makes sense.

Now all I have to do is find out if my Pump has a relay card, explain it to my electrician who only speaks Spanish and see what happens.

How do i check and what do I do if there isn't one?

Thanks too Allen,

Is there anywhere I can find instructions or wiring diagrams to hook up the intellichlor to the IO board?

If you don't have the board already installed, after purchase here is a good video on the install of the board. It will also indicate where to look for the board:

Page 4 of your installation manual should have the wiring diagram. Programming is also in the manual. A copy of the page is attached.
