Hi there. I just got the IF code on my pool heater. Going to try and troubleshoot and check and clean the gas jet nozzles. I wanted to know how do I get to the gas nozzles? Do I need to disconnect the gas line union on the pipe that goes into the heater? Thank you.

If you have to go that far, you need to shut the gas off before the union, open the union, remove the pipe going into the main gas valve, remove the manifold assembly with the valve still attached (remove the mounting screws and any pipe clamp), pull the manifold, use a piece of copper wire, or a pipe cleaner. Don't use steel wire, it can scratch the orifice and cause bad flame. Concentrate on the orifice right below the flame sensor as that is where spiders seem to like to built their nest first in any heater.

Be sure to use new pipe dope when re-installing the gas line to the valve, none is needed on the uion.

Better to try to clean the flame-sense rod first. Be gentle, a Scotch-Brite pad, or even a newer dollar (5, 10, 20) bill will do the job. If you use a metal cleaner (file, steel-wool, sandpaper) be very-gentle. There is a coating on that rod that is easily damaged by anything that abrasive.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to be replacing the igniter and heat sensor before attempting anything with the gas line.
Do you see the glow of the igniter? If so it is not likely in need of replacement. Do the burners ever light? If so it is likely the flame sensor.

Now the hard part. Do you hear the gas valve click on and then off less than 3 seconds later? If so it is one of the control boards. Hayward recommends that they both be replaced. If you replace the wrong one, it will be damaged by the other and there doesn't appear to be a way to really know which is bad.

The display board does not have to be replaced, its the other two. That's why I don't sell Hayward heaters anymore. Expensive repair.
