My mother in law has been in memory care for 4-5 months. Had a pool cleaner person going to her house once a week to service the pool in her home that is getting some things done to prepare for sale. Pool guy was charging as if he was going but he clearly wasn’t because I went by there and found the pool green and slimy. Now, I have it back to clear. My questions are:

It is an in ground screened in pool/concrete. Built with the house in early 80’s. Very old school plumbing/one valve. Pentair clean and clear filter. Standard kidney shaped pool. It does not have a swg. I am not going to install one. I cannot go there daily to check chlorine level. Does this mean I shouldn’t use liquid chlorine? If not, then what should I use ?

Today the readings are as follows and yes, I have the proper testing kit from tfp I use for my own pool. I have a more modern set up and a swg so I’m at a loss on how to maintain this one from a far.

Chlorine : 25(hasn’t come down from SLAM that lasted 4 days/ today is day 6).

TA: 50
CYA: 50

Where do I go from here with this thing? I don’t think I’ll be hiring a pool person again. I’d like to just keep it maintained until it sells/closes. It doesn’t get any use at all currently so low swim load.

If I checked on it once or twice a week, is liquid chlorine out of the picture?

With the pool being in a screened enclosure you may be able to get away with liquid chlorine twice a week. You can try it and see what FC level you find when you visit to test.

If the FC level is getting too low between visits then putting trichlor tablets in a floater in the pool and accepting that you will drain down the pool whenever the CYA gets above 80.

It’s only about a 15-20 min drive. The issue is, my youngest son who isn’t so young anymore, can’t sit up or walk or roll over so going over there isn’t so simple and lifting him extra in a day on repeat for something like that, really is hard on the back. I’m not getting any younger and he’s not getting any lighter he’d be with me when I go. Lots of extra lifting that would be!

Sorry to hear about your mom

I hope the house sells quickly for you. Until then do just as AJ described- a combo of liquid chlorine and a floater of pucks if you find the frequency of liquid chlorine too much too keep up with
& Keep an eye on the cya.
Basically thats what the pool services do- dose high once a week with lc and the tabs get you by after that wears off until the next visit.
Hopefully the weather will be on your side and the fc demand will be at least a little lower while you juggle two houses.
