How to repair hole cut in concrete deck from return line fix?

Hi all! Last fall I had a leak in the return line that was coming into the stairs. We decided to have the concrete in the deck cut and tried to repair it ourselves but ultimately had to call in a pool repair company as the threat of frost was imminent. At any rate, we backfilled the hole to protect the plumbing during the winter and now I have about a 25x25" hole (not perfectly square because the concrete was cut poorly). Further, some expansion joints were cut as well....

One friend told me to put in a large paver and fill in with caulk. What are the thoughts of the forum? What would be the best way to fix this?

Honestly I would just clean up the edges removing anything loose and just fill the hole with concrete. Trowel it smooth and get it as level as possible with what is already there. Unfortunately you will always be able to see that patch.

Maybe after patching cover with something (wood planter box made to size, storage box, bench etc). As Chuck said, you will always be able to see the repair.

I agree to just fill with concrete. Take a piece of the cut out section with the color and head to home depot and they'll match it. After the concrete starts to set depress with the edge of the trowel to continue the lines on the surrounding deck. It will blend much better that way.

Since the patch will be always noticeable, as suggested, cover w concrete. Then you can build a form to go around all of the broken edges and build up the concrete about 6 inches, whatever the size your pool tile would be, then put tile around the built-up sides and some kind of stone on the top too. From there you can put a planter box or use it for seasonal things...
