How to repair (and prevent) small tears & holes in pool cover

We have a safety cover for an inground pool. Over the winter, heavy snow melting and refreezing caused it to be weighed below the surface and tore up a few holes where the cover contacts the concrete edge. A safety cover seems pretty expensive. Are there ways to repair these? Any tricks to prevent such friction-caused tears?

I have two 90 degree corners that puncture holes in my pool cover until I began putting a folded old towel on those points to cushion it against the cover.

I have repaired holes in my cover using Tarp Repair tape or wide Duct Tape. Taping both sides of the hole.

Note that once you get holes in the cover it may no longer function as a Safety Cover and support its designed weight.

Acorns got under mine one year in the fall and wore a bunch of holes through along the coping. 🤬🤬🤬 Periodically check for acorns/rocks/etc along the edges over the winter.

in the spots it would rub, like the ladder flanges, I’d cover them with a few layers of gorilla tape to smooth the rubbing.

Good to know that duct tape will at least hold up in the weather!

Yes, I'll definitely be more vigilant with checking hard objects under the cover. The pool edges left white-ish lines/bands on the four sides of the cover, and almost all the holes were on these lines. The heavy weight of ice in the winter visibly pulled the middle of the cover downward. Luckily the water level wasn't too low; otherwise I'd be afraid of more serious damage..
